Gear selection

Daft question, my car has had new gear selection rods, but it sounds very metallic when changing gear. I checked today and at the end of the shaft (engine end) there seems to be no rubber bush. It's like a ball socket in the metal u shape holder. Hopefully this makes sense?! Any help would be great! Cheers.

There should be a rubber ball/bush on there, is there alot of movement around there?

VW heritage state that it will fit 4 and 5 speed gearboxes but I found I had to use a different one when I changed my 1978 Mk1 Scirocco from 4 speed to 5, the 4 speed one had a smaller ball than the 5 speed?

 

Bought a Bush kit from classic-vw. The gears are now great. Still got an odd rattle, it must be a heat shield or something!!

I've also discovered a halfords advanced extension bar is about the right size for the space between the metal plate!
