Sawing through gearbox flange
I've just realised the clutch cable has been sawing through the gearbox housing of my cabby. Brian of BrokeVW has very kindly pointed out there should be a rubber washer and rubber grommet in the flange to prevent this. I've not so far found a source for a new set of these and was hoping someone could direct me to one.
I attach a sketch from the BrokeVW site which shows the grommet and washer.

Yet again, John, a sensible suggestion from you! I'd assumed it would be long out of date, but I'll check into it.

On later cars there is a plastic clip which fits to the brake master cyinder and hold the cable upright. On my mk1 scirocco I've used a bit wire to hold the cable. If the cable is on an angle it will saw its way through the gearbox.
Also check you have the right lengh cable fitted.
grommet looks like this but make sure the cable is straight or it will saw through the gromit as well.

Thanks a lot for that, mark1. Good point about holding the cable perpendicular to the flange and should be not too difficult to arrange some kind of support. Also I'll have to get a tig weld repair on the cut groove no doubt.

I would not worry about welding up the cut in the gearbox, once the grommet is push in you won't see it anyway.

as above dont worry about the cut, once supported and bung fitted it'll be fine. If you find one in scrappy mk2 golfs have a steady arm fitted to the box itself, you have 2 styles manual and self-adjusting clutch type. the manual one is obviously perfect, the auto one is too big but the cable can be secured to it with a cable tie.
I had a chewed box on my cab and with new grommet and mk2 arm it was fine
now i have access to my pc again, i can check etka:
192721343 - manual cable mk2 steady arm - NLA
171721308 - rubber cable bung - 2.62+VAT
As you can see its NLA from VW unfortunatly! but if you fin d one you also need an M8x35 bolt, a nut and 2 washers to attach it to the box.
You can just about see it and the way its bolted to box here:

Good, I'll chase that up. Unfortunately I cannot see your image, just a square with a ? mark in it! I'd really appreciate it if you could dig out the image as it's so much easier to find one when you know what it what it looks like. Many thanks for taking the time to explain that.
