Adjusting a new clutch

Post

Is it easy?

Had a new clutch fitted and I've driven home and realised I can't get first gear and it crunches in second. Is it a quick and easy job to adjust this?  😎

Yeah very easy, once you've sussed which direction to adjust it in. 17mm spanner IIRC.

As above.

But if you find there's not much room for adjustment you may have had the wrong clutch cable installed like I had.

When I got mine I took it to a local VW Dealer to have a new clutch and cable fitted.
After driving it for a few days I had similar issues to you so I took it to a mate of mine who owns a workshop and had a Mk1.

When he looked at the clutch cable he said straight away it was the wrong one and he ordered another. Within an hour we had the new, new cable and when compared to the other one it was about 6" longer.

Fitted it and never had a problem since and I adjust the cable once a year after the winter.

Not saying yours is the same but just watch out for it, I mean I was at a main VW dealer after all!  :o

aim for about 10mm free play when you lift the cable straight up at the box end

You should also have about 10mm of play at the pedal.

To adjust the cable loosen the locking nut and turn the treaded bit to adjust.

Picture… Locking nut at the bottom of the black plastic tube and turn the threaded bit underneath the locking nut so you get 10mm movement when pulling up on the cable and that will give you 10mm at the pedal as well.

Make sure the cable is also straight up from the gearbox like mine in the photo.
