4 speed to 5 speed gearbox

i've currently got a 1.5 jb carb engine fitted with a 4 speed gearbox. I looking to replace this with a 5 speed gearbox and would like to know which gearbox I should use for a straight swap and compatibly with my engine. Also is this a worthwhile swap. I'm hoping it will make the car nicer to drive.

Does anyone know if a mk2 golf gti gearbox will fit? As i might be able to find one of these locally.

Yes you can fit a 5 speed box but you will also need the linkage as they are different, check you have a bracket fitted to the steering rack as I'm not sure the 4 speed box uses it?
You may find the 5th gear is a simular size to the 4th gear in your car already so the revs won't be any lower at 60 mph?
There is some 5 speed boxes with bigger 5th gears and an 4 +E gear box which has a very tall 5th gear but it's for motorways really and any hill you will need to drop back down to 4th.

info here on ratios etc, find the code of your gearbox and you can compare it to the 5 speed box.

You will need to find out the size of your drive shaft flanges as they can be different on 5 speed boxes, later boxes usally use 100mm and early boxes 90mm, you can swop them over but not sure if 4speed gearboxes flanges fit the 5 speed boxes?

I fitted a 5 speed box to my 1978 Mk1 scirocco as that had a 4 speed box but that already had 90mm flanges and I got hold of the all the linkage at a scrap yard but it was 20 years ago and mk1 golfs could easily be found in many scrap yards.

And yes Mk2 golfs use the same 020 gearbox but the mount is different so you will need to find a mk1 golf gearbox mount.

The bar with the shaft fitted to it is bent down and the heat shield is fitted in the wrong place.

I see what you mean I think how its been stored might have been caught on something & bent, just needs knocking back & the shield is only on do finger tight so it didn't get lost. That's a good eye for detail & glad you spotted this. The price new is decent & it's nicely powder coated. If you do need any of the parts that I have just pm me & we can sort it out bud.
