Hi all
i have two waxstats spare, one good and one looks as though its leaking the wax from inside (waxy stuff around the brass screw) my question is can you pull them apart without ruining them as the good one of the two has one of the water pipes broken off and it would be nice to use the housing of the knackered one
cheers kurt

well since both bust cant hurt to try! iirc there are 2 dimples inside which i assume is used for a special tool to unscrew the inner part
with the one which has a snapped hose fitting you could carefully cut the housing till it splits in half, then you can see how its put together and if there is any scope for rebuild

Hi john
That's probably not a bad idea as the leaky one is metal bodied and I can't get the thing undone for love nor money its seriously stuck.
The broken pipe one on the other hand is plastic so could be cut as you say there both unuseable anyway.
One thing I had noticed is the metal one is the original one from my car and the pipe bore is larger than the broken plastic one and the replacement one I have on my car are the new plastic ones all smaller bore than the metal type ones and does this make a difference to the speed the waxstat warms up

Thinking on it I could probably warm the metal one up that would make it easier to undo.

Here is the element.
Well the plastic one came apart without any trouble and the actual element inside is completely intact which is good to know.
Still can't get the metal one out yet to use the housing but hopefully a soak in wd40 should see it freed tomorrow.
The bore of the metal one is 10mm and the plastic one is 7mm that's quite a difference
