Vw golf gti mk1 convertible exhaust system

Hello everyone, I've just bought a golf gti mk1 convertible 1989 project. A fair few bits have been removed for renovation but most are there to reattach. The bit that is missing is the exhaust. The downpipes are there but not the mid section or back box. So I need to replace these. I was kinda thinking of an oem exhaust but maybe should consider more of a sporty system. Should I replace the downpipes at the same time? I don't want anything dead load but healthy growl is fine. So if anyone has an opinion on a mk1 convertible exhaust system, I'd love to hear it!
