Old original carb needs replacing

Hi All post this for my son in law who owns a Mk1 Golf 1989….its a soft top.

Far as I know its a 1.6 and its a petrol engine.

Ok its got the peirburg carb at present and its up the wall….racing all the time.

I believe there is a replacement carb that can be fitted in place of the peirburg….

Can anybody give me any info on this conversion please….I will prob be doing it for him as he is not very mechanical.

Nick in Cheshire.

The company to help is WebCon: Welcome to Webcon UK Ltd | Webcon UK Ltd

There are a few different variations (due to different inlet manifold) over the various big block Mk1 Golfs, so beware of this and let them advise you, or be ready to order one, then maybe have to send it back and get a different one (or change the inlet manifold, which is a last resort but possible).

I think in 1989 it will be a 1.8 engine not a 1.6?

Can you post up a picture?

If not does the main water hose from the head to the top of the radiator come out of the head between cylinder 1 and 2  or 3 and 4, cylinder 1 is the cam belt end and 4 is the gearbox…

You need to make sure you get the right Webber carb as they are jetted different for a 1.6 and 1.8.

Fast idle on a Pierburg could be a stuck wax stat or blocked coolant hoses going to the wax stat, do the coolant hoses get hot the same rate as the other coolant hoses near the carb?

Mk1 Golf....what carb for it.

It should be a 1.8 so Webber 32/34 DMTL should suffice.
That’s what I and many others have.
Make sure you replace the rubber mounting base mount. It goes on the inlet manifold. Often rotten or cracked and source of poor idling and vacuum leaks.

You need to check the wax stat on the pierburg.
There’s a guide on here if you google search it.
Pierburg not a bad carb if it’s set up properly.

Found the guide…but nothing I could see about carbs….there is a fuel injection section and engine conversions.

Could somebody point me in the right direction to find the guide I need.

Can I ask....is the Peirburg carb worth saving.....or is a conversion to a Weber the way to go.

That's a good question but I don't think there is a right answer. The Peirburg carb is known to wear out or develop other issues over a long time, hence the emergence of the Weber carb conversion on the Mk1 Golf (and many other cars). The Weber is a much simpler carb, and also more widely understood, parts availability, etc. Part of that simplicity is its manual choke instead of auto choke.

But its not the original carb; the cost of a Weber conversion has risen a lot over the years; and a Peirburg is fixable too.

The Pierburg carb is a better carb than the Webber but it's complicated and finding someone now who understand them and can tune them is getting hard.

That's the main reason why we change to the Webber, it's easy at home to set it up and get running, then couple of screws to adjust the mixture and idle speed once fitted up to a CO meter.

There is a guide on the Pierburg here. (Mk2 Scirocco uses the same carb and engine.)

https://forum.sciroccoregister.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=11151

There is lots of info online for the Pierburg 2e2 carb.

Ive switched to a Webber as my car was a daily drive at the time when the carb went wrong and I needed the car for work so needed it working ASAP, only takes a couple of hours to switch to a Webber and getting it running.

Thanks guys….lots to go at there…..looking at the exploded view of the carb….there is a lot going on….I like my stuff simple.

Had a look at Weber Carb Prices…..around £400 is that what my SIL can expect to pay?

I guess your car is a manual gearbox as it's a different carb for an auto…

Showing out of stock at the moment but may be worth giving them a call/email.

Yes Manual gearbox….so in general what would most owners do for easy of use….convert to a weber or repair the Peirburb.

I wonder….will the std air filter fit the weber or will it need fettling.

Yes
Standard air box will still goon the Weber.
That’s the set up I have on mine.

Ok my son in law is now quite keen to look at going down the weber carb route…..but before he does he asked me to ask you guys a few questions.

So are there any downside to fitting a Webber carb to replace a peirburg carb….performance starting MPG wise.

Will having a weber carb on his 1.8 petrol soft top mk1 gold less or more sellable if he decides to sell it at any time.

Post

I can't say I noticed any difference in MPG or performance, some say it feels more responsive with a Webber.

I would say a Webber carb will make the car more appealing to future buyers as it's a much simpler carb to set up and work on.
