Fuel pump wiring

Hello from the states, I recently got a 1986 cabrio 5 speed with a 16v and I'm all happy cuz it's my project car. Today I tried to hook up my external fuel pump (not the in tank fuel pump) and came across 3 wires shown in the picture.
The issue is I didn't take the old pump off and I don't know how the wires go on. Please if anyone can help me that would be great! 123911EC-5C8E-4826-AD32-99DBF1D8E226.jpeg

If you see me post it's cuz I got confused with the  mk1 gas cap

Hi there and welcome to the club first of all.

Sorry but I'm no help whatsoever but your in luck because we have a great member state side who is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge on the Mk1 Cabrio and his name is Brian aka Briano1234

Really nice guy very approachable so hopefully he'll have some pointers for you.

Good luck with it and do let us know how you get on! ;)

You obviously have me confuzzeled with some one else.
I know nothing about CIS….. :) Digi?  possibly.

The red/white is power to the pump, the brown is earth, I can't find the brown/white in the bentley, but I suspect that key on,  check to see if it is a power or a ground.
from the accumulator, or other component of the CIS that I haven't a clue on.    I see what I thought was black, but then realized it was a vinyl clad brown/white.

answered the same in the HEP thread above.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

No Worries,  I started in 80, on diesels, for 20 years skipped the CIS and bought in to 90's Digi…. in 2004

But he answered his own questions as it was a Previous Owners Repair hack……

as Brian said, the red/yellow is pump power, brown is pump earth. the extra black wire is not factory so could be for anything, chase it back best you can.

If I had to guess I would say it was added by a PO to bypass a bad wire on the fuel pump rather than chase and correctly fix the fault.

looks like you're also missing the rubber boots which seal the electrical connections from moisture, you can get them but it means chopping the ring terminals off and crimping new ones on
