Also need new fuel pump.. the old is Bosch 0 580 254 909, Bosch catalog say 0 580 464 126.
which is recommended? please help a newbie on this forum, tnx

0 580 254 909 and 580 464 126 will both work fine for a MK1 GTI

It holds the pressure in the fuel system when you switch the engine off so makes hot starts easier.mcjjordan said
What does it actually do?
There is a little screw on the back and if you remove that and fuel leaks out it's shot.
Old video explains it all for you, 3.20 mins in is the accumulator
