Fuel accumulator is bosch 0 438 170 040, VW part number 431133441D or C
0 580 254 909 and 580 464 126 will both work fine for a MK1 GTI

I need a new one and the Heriatage one is about £250.
I can get one of the above for half the price.
I know it's an old post but fingers crossed.

I bought a genuine Bosch 0438170040 off Amazon last year. Still listing at £135 with free delivery.

I was potentially needing a new accumulator earlier this week - but it turned out not to be the issue. After reading a few threads across various forums, and chatting with someone direct on here, you can use a 0438170039 accumulator, which from what I could see don't have the scene tax applied to them!

What does it actually do?

It holds the pressure in the fuel system when you switch the engine off so makes hot starts easier.mcjjordan said

There is a little screw on the back and if you remove that and fuel leaks out it's shot.
Old video explains it all for you, 3.20 mins in is the accumulator
