On Gti, (DX engine) cars you have to remove the vacuum advance pipe and plug the end to set the timing using a timing light, did the garage do this if you car has this type of dissy.
To set my timing I advance it till it pinks then retard it till it stops as I don't own a timing light and it's so tricky to see down the hole with all the stuff in the way. Also the type of fuel can make a difference with older car but not sure if it's the same with a 2006 car?
