Hi guys I have a 1991 1.8gti DX cabby and the the back box is shot, also the rest of the system looks small. Does anyone know what the factory bore size is. Also I'm thinking of replacing it anyway however I read conflicting things. What would the best bore size for this engine for the best performance so the gasses can flow freely and have a nice burble sound but not in ya face Honda style
hoping to get things done this weekend

A header works, a 4-2 manifold and Dual down pipe works. If you want free flow then you can increase the size of the stock pipes to 2 2 1/2 inches but keep a resonator, as that is what really keeps it from sounding ricer.. even with a (flatulence can) muffler…. …

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

I take it the resonator is the first box

At least he didn't say 'headers'
Translated to English
Manifold (either 4 branch to 1 or 4 to 2 to 1 tend to be standard if you want to improve flow) This includes the downpipe usually doing away with a restrictive joint
No CAT on uk cars (as far as I'm aware)
Pipe from end of manifold (if it includes downpipe) to Mid Box (small one sits just behind gear lever)
Pipe out of mid box and over beam (usually one piece over the beam)
Rear Silencer
Shiny bit that pokes out the back of the car
2 inch will give a better flow.
Stainless tends to give a 'rasp' to the sound. If you go too big it'll sound loud.
If you don't have the mid box it'll sound louder but if you stick at around 2" and use a good quality back box it will not be too bad.
With a cabby I'd stick to 2" and both boxes to be honest as otherwise it drives you nuts when cruising because of the drone from the exhaust. I had a 2.5" with only one box and have swapped it out for a 2" with 2 boxes on mine.
Bro-in-law has a 3" with only one box and you can hear him from a mile away!
Depends what you want really.
Without mid box

give them a bell
I spoke with Stuart 01543 252010) and after a long discussion about classic cars and golfs we decided on a system similar but with some tweaks to fit my small block (cos neither of know how long the manifold is and what the full length of a small block tin top exhaust is) plus he changed the tip size for me and I got a discount 'cos of dealing direct!
Can't recommend the service and knowledge enough TBH.
Tell them you're a member of the club and would like the 'cheeky git' discount.
Hasn't arrived yet so I will update when it does

Wait I thought I was speaking plain english….. I am bi-lingual, I speak english and worse english…(southern drawl, ya'll.)
Manifold (either 4 branch to 1 or 4 to 2 to 1 tend to be standard if you want to improve flow) This includes the downpipe usually doing away with a restrictive joint
No CAT on uk cars (as far as I'm aware)
I wish we didn't need them here, but there are some states that require it, as they are emission crazy, and some states that aren't.
Mine only has one more inspection, then it is going to be replaced by a SS raceland cat delete header…. and no cat.
Pipe from end of manifold (if it includes downpipe) to Mid Box (small one sits just behind gear lever)
Pipe out of mid box and over beam (usually one piece over the beam)
WOW you call them Mid-box, rear box, and silencer…
To us the rear box is a Muffler, and it quiets down the sound.
Your MID-Box is a Resonator over here, it is actually a Pneumatic Harmonic Dampner.
Uses the Air tight Capsule around the pipe to reduce the Hammering effect of the Exhaust gases as they expand and are pushed out the pipe. The Gases hot and loud tend to expand the pipe. The resonator by the closed trapped air in side reduces the expansion of the pipes and quiets it down…..
Rear Silencer
Shiny bit that pokes out the back of the car
The shiney bit that sticks out the back we refer to as the Tail Pipe extension, some use a Chrome wrap, others leave it plain. Make sure that if you have a "Clipper" kit, that you have it extend out from the bumper skirt about 3-4 inches otherwise you could exhaust burn the skirt.
If you don't have the mid box it'll sound louder but if you stick at around 2" and use a good quality back box it will not be too bad.
Just get a better Stereo and Crank it up…..
Bro-in-law has a 3" with only one box and you can hear him from a mile away! Well he dosen't have to call prior to stopping by for a chat, visit, (in my case asking for Monies.)

Nah me old fruit cake, you was speaking American.
It's similar to English, but has been corrupted. ;-)
Is there an age thing for cats in the US then? Didn't realise that. Interesting.
I'm liking the name if the resonator box. Makes sense too, now you've explained what it does. Ta for that. Everyday you learn summat is a good day.
You certainly don't want your tail pipe to burn your skirt! Painful.
Louder stereo is a way forward. Works in a saloon, I found not so much in a floppy top.
It's not the calling before he comes that's an issue. His car lives on my drive and he's virtually nocturnal! It's a pain being woken up by it at 3am!
Glad you took my mickey taking in the way it was meant!
I need some new western style boots, can you help me out y'all?

That is probably the only style of boot I will not wear.
They hurt my feet. I have Duck feet,,,, EEEE on the size scale, I guess my ancestors must of all been cops… (flat feet and wide)….. I couldn't even get my toes curled up enough to fit in them.
Wish I could, have you heard of that great invention of Al Gores, called the interweb,,,,, and then there is Amazon…

Sorry to hijack the thread, but will this exhaust fit post 88 cabbies? Mine is a 1991 Gti but I've removed the clipper kit. I read somewhere the late models use the scirocco floorpan?

Yep it does use the 'rocco floorpan
Yep they do one to fit late cabbys, but f you've removed the kit then you'll want a shorter tip, otherwise it'll stick out about 3 feet and you'll keep walking into it when you wash the car……….. or a least I did
