New tank - fuel wont come out!!

Post

Please help!

This is an odd one. I fitted a new gti replica tank (GSF), all new lines and pump etc for a 16v conversion. I handed over the car to my local garage for them to get the engine started, and MOT'd.

For some stupid reason they cant get fuel out of the tank, right at the outlet, let alone through the pump etc. They dont want to fill it up becuase it will then be hard to handle. Theyve tried sucking it out, vacuums etc. If they angle the tank, they get a little bit through.

Has anyone had this experience? It know it sounds like something obvious blocking the outlet pipe I know, but i cant think what. Can you?!

if its a pattern tank its probably a diesel tank, by the sounds of it the tank hasn't been made properly and wants taking back.

i would forget gsf and look for a genuine gti tank as they have a proper swirl pot inside, the diesel tank design is inferior and can lead to fuel starvation when cornering.  with 2nd hand tank though you'll want to check the swirl pot flaps are good, the rubber can degrade

Does your car have a lift pump fitted to the fuel tank gauge sender in the fuel tank?
Looks like this.

Thanks for the replies

I bought that tank, there, but there is no lift pump, and come to think of it i dont think theres a filter in there either. It was previously a 1.6 carb.

I really need the garage to sort it out - i'm done with hunting down parts nowadays, had one too many accidents jacking up cars and mucking around with fuel tanks.

If theres a way of getting it going without sourcing another tank that would be good.

Ive done a complete 16v swap and I cant beleive this is stopping me its a joke!

basically you got 2 options, replace the tank as its duff, or fit the post-84 mk1 cab/scirocco injection or all g40 shape petrol lift pump and swirl pot in the top and cap the bottom connection :)

Okay thanks for that

I think i'll scource the lift pump, and swirl pot, as its nice having a new tank.

I'm concerned theres no in tank filter - any advice there? Where should it go?

Oh and how do you suggest wiring it up? I have a ce2 fusebox so I guess it should already have a pin for it

Thanks

the lifter pump will have a filter on it so no worries if you go that route :)

for the fuel pumps wire both the lifter and main pump to the fuel pump power pins on the fusebox plug M:
1 - brn - GTI fuel pump earth and transfer pump pin 4
2 - red/yel- GTI fuel pump live and transfer pump pin 3
