My golf cuts out!!

When left running on the drive or sat in traffic the fuel pump starts going mad and makes the car cut out.

Im starting to think it might be to do with sh*t in the fuel tank? How easy is it to empty and clean out the tank???

Year and Model would be nice to know.

If it is whinning the main pump is being starved for fuel.
In 84.5 on the Cabriolets they installed an in-tank pump.

To determine the in-tank is if you have 13 gallon tank or 10.

To inspect it you have to have 3/4 to 1/2 tank of fuel.

I had the same problem, went through 3 fuel pumps under the car.. only to find out it was the lift pump inside the tank that caused the cut outs especially at traffic lights

Lots of threads and information on this subject, also search/check fuel pump relay, lift pump, fuel filler neck/fuel tank.

You should be able to find the answers as it is a common problem.

Mine tends to cur out if left run or if the tanks under half full and you out ur foot down. Do u think it could be the same thing?

I kept having numerous issues with the fuel pump, ended up instaling an electric pump so far its been good!

Finally for under the car and had a look! The filler neck is rusty and theres a hole in it. So im guessing theres rust in the tank! Is there an easy way to empty the tank without dropping it?

Siphon it out as much as you can before opening the sending unit to get a good look.....
