Golf GTI cab 1990. Starts but cuts out.

Bought my new golf home last week drove 120 miles no problem other than a burning smell from the footwell. Fuse box I think. But now it starts up but cuts straight out. I’ve fitted new in tank pump and still same. While I’m waiting for new fuse box to come is there anything else I could check to get it going. Cheers guys.
