Morning all, I'm coming to the point of installing the exhaust system on my Mk1 GTi tintop. I have already bolted up the VW Heritage manifold, and this is going to mate with a Powersprint 60mm race system. On the manifold is a bolted connecting pipe, OD is 45mm. I obviously need to use an adaptor to go from 45 to 60mm, which is straightforward enough, but I'm wondering if I should cut this connecting pipe and add in some sort of stainless flexible section between the manifold and front silencer to reduce stress on the manifold from movement? Perhaps this is not necessary so looking for advice please.

Hi mate last Friday I went from stainless steel manifold and standard pipe .to stainless steel manifold and 76mm stainless full system I went from 45mm to 55mm at the end of the manifold. An adapter was made for it by my exhaust guy .at the silencers .I've no flexi connection. Just really well fitted next day it passed the mot and has run beautifully no bangs no rattles .so I would say no mate ….

That's great Deano, thanks for the advice. I take it you mean 76mm tailpipe rather than a full 3" system from manifold back?

Is your manifold the one in the pic? It has a flexi connection, of sorts. I ran mine which was very similar style of connection (3 bolts and springs instead of two, and for 16V) with no issues but I had super-hard engine mounts too.
If on normal engine mounts, I'd say……yes its best to have a proper flexi connection, but its not a massive issue if you don't.

I would say If you have watched the engine move under acceleration/retardation you would want to fit a flexy joint. Trouble is best place for it is close to the engine which with a 4 branch isnt really practical..
