Just pulled the fuel tank for the GTI out of storage and it looks like there is very light surface rust inside the tank. Is this now scrap or if I get it cleaned will it be ok?

doesnt look too bad, just be carefull when having it cleaned/painted inside that they dont mess up the swirl pot inside the tank

This bit mate yeah?
The other thing I noticed is that the rubber circle bit on the right of that photo has come adrift and i'm guessing floating around somewhere in the tank.. i've give it a shake but can't find it.. is it gonna matter that this isn't there? I'm thinking it's to stop bits getting sucked into the fuel line?

thats the one, i think it stops fuel drainign out the pot so maybe see if you can find some kind of bung of a similar size you can block the hole with

he has a gti tank and has had issues with his swirl pot and will be replacing the tank, he might have this bung

Gonna be just as easy to source a new tank I think… or maybe not looks like aftermarket tanks do not have swirl pots???

the 'gti' aftermarket tanks are actually diesel ones, and have inferior swirl pot
an alternative solution is a wee pump on the bottom outlet and a swirl pot before the main pump, though finding room for that may be tricky!
i would have suggested a lifter pump in the tank but just found out it wont fit with the swirl pot inside! you could fit a carb fuel tank with the lifter pump though, and an external swirl pump before the pump. again may be tricky to fit if its a stock gti as the accumulator is where the later cab/rocco/polo swirl pot wants to be

Found this old thread which shows the Klokkerholm tank (tank which vw heritage sells) pot but it looks rubbish.

Just rang a tank repair company which sad it is possible to repair but it's gonna cost as a starter £50 to de-gas it..
looks like the only decent aftermarket tank is a Spectra premium one who no longer have a distributor in the uk..

Have my fuel tank out to fix leak and cut hole in top and removed swirl pool. There was no large grommet, like in photo, at bottom of swirl pool just a large 'o' ring. From what I can see the o ring seals the swirl pool to bottom of the tank so fuel/dirt cant come in that way as it would bypass the filter. So if you look into tank with filter removed dont panic if you see no grommet it maybe wasnt there just an o ring which cant be seen. Mal

hmm maybe if you could find a really fat fuel safe oring you could stuff it in? would be a royal pain and you would end up with a lot of blood in the fuel once done i recon
