Fuel lift pump/tank query

I've recently bought a mk1 driver with a 1.8 16V engine fitted. Fuel supply was completely reliant on the main fuel pump, which was noisy and required priming to start. I've bought myself an in tank lift pump to solve this however I'm getting conflicting advice re the fuel tank. Do I need to buy a GTI fuel tank to suit the lift pump? Fuel supply is currently gravity fed from the pipes on the lower edge of the tank. Once I fit the lift pump these become redundant. Has anyone come across a tried and tested way to cap off the existing pipes or is it just a case of changing the tank?

Injected or Carbed?

I would inspect your Tank and clean the swirl pot check for rust or other restrictions resolve those.

Then replace the main pump.

When you get in your car you insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the first position wait, I said WAIT for 4 seconds prior to Starting the car by turning the Key to start, Failure to do so on a Injected car prevents the fuel system to prime the lines by Pressurizing them.

If manual, Check the Swirl pot, Check the tank Check the filler neck for Rust.  

Until you inspect things don't just go throwing things at it.  

Gravity fed is better for bottom feeders.  
Why, you would have to run hoses buy a lift pump buy a new Sending unit so the Electrical connections are there. Tie the wires into your fuel pump.  And then you have just placed another thing in the way to break down on you.

The mk1 gti tintop works perfectly well with out a lift pump in the tank, the fuel coming out the bottom into the accumulator / high pressure fuel pump. Afaik only the cabrio has the lift pump, assuming the tank is a different shape does it fit a tintop tank...

in 84.5 and up the Cabriolet went from a 10 gallon tank to a 13, when they did that they went from bottom feeder to top, and included the Swirlpot/sump to the outside of the tank, and added a in-tank pump.  The sending unit went to 3 wires, 2 for power to the pump, and one for the sender.

It was the same time they stopped production of the Rabbit/Golf over here from mk1 to mk2. and re-badged the Rabbit as a GOLF.
