I’ve cleaned out the tank, changed the filter. And now the car will run for longer before cutting ok.
Before cutting out the fuel pump gets really loud almost like its not getting fuel maybe the lift pumping gets to hot and cuts out?

With that said you mentioned a lifting pump, so I suspect that you have a 84.5 or later Cabriolet, GTI vert…CIS or Digi.
Since you mention that the pump shuts off after getting loud usually means to me the following things:
Lift pump is old and not pumping to the Filter/Swirlpot/Sump that is attached to the drivers side of the fuel tank via a clip, You can barely see it behine the axle….
This can be caused by a bad lift pump,
A bad or collapsed interconnect hose/dampner on the lift pump,
A collapsed hose from the Sending unit to the Filter/swirlpot/sump on the side of the tank.
Since you are saying it is making noise before it quits indicates to me that your Fuel Pump Relay is good and not subjecting itself to a cold solder joint cut out.
Letting it go unabated will cause the primary external fuel pump to fail costing you more monies.
The reason why it is making noise is that the Primary or external fuel pump had to over-come the restrictions and suck fuel from the tank through the in-tank pump, Filter/swirlpot/sump, through the filter, and then push it towards the engine… This strain is similar to your child Whining about having to do the chores pitches a fit then sitting down on the floor… So the fuel pump (external) has to over-come these conditions and for a while it is ok about it eventually it starts to complain as in Whining, then it sits down and until it cools off usually about 10 minutes or so will start to work again until as the shampoo bottle suggests, Lather, Rinse, Repeat….
So an inspection and or replacement of the lift pump and connection hose is most likely warranted.
P.S. I didn't read your signature line until after I had posted….Sorry, but see that it is a 87 GTI Vert…my assumptions are still valid if you are using CIS as the in-tank lift pump was installed in all verts after the change in 84.5 from a 10 gallon bottom feeder tank prior to mid-year to a 13 gallon (you can convert to liters, or IMP Gallons) in 84.5 mid

Modern petrol attacks the rubber hose that connects the lift pump to the fuel gauge sender.

Yes, that is the correct lift pump. Search the forums for a guide to replacing it - the trick is not to lose that filter off the end when pulling the pump out or putting it in.

No trick to keeping it on as you install…. Tie a String around it.
Once you have it in and not sealed cut the string and gently pull it out.
