hello : ) so i just bought my first caddy project..had a lot of mk1 golfs before and always wanted a caddy…

so i got one today..a barn find - no keys and not run in a long while by the looks of it…

I was impatient i think,, chucked some diesel in her, checked oil and loaded water in… pulled the ignition wires…
now first i started by touching the red and red/black wires - you could here the starter motor turning… then i connected the dash lights with the power cable and had dash lights/blower etc… from memory i thought both dash and starter need to have power to start car - but when i gave power simultaneously to both everything stopped working…
ive checked all the fuses and all ok there…but cant get back to where i was an hour ago and before i messed with the wires!

oh dear what have i done!

please tell me! : )

cheers

the wires i connected were:
*red - red/black = starter
*red - black/yellow.

remaining ignition wires are:
*black/grey to a large spade connector
*two wires to a small spade connector - 1:black/grey 2:small black wire.

Check the fusible links at the battery, there were 2 one for the Starter, and one for the cluster/fuse box.  Check your ground wires as if they are corroded then you may not be getting ground.

For a Diesel, all you need to start them is 12V+ on the fuel cutoff, 12V+ on the glow plugs for about 10 seconds, then apply 12v+ to the starter solenoid Left hand terminal at the solenoid.

Leave the 12V at the Fuel shut off…
Glows are only needed for the first 10 seconds… then you can remove it.  (either to the fuse on the firewall, or the glow plug bus bar.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

No, the starter solenoid is the upper right spad of the starter

The Fuel shutoff Solenoid is on the injection pump and has to be on all the time the engine is running.

The Glow plugs are above the injectors, and there is a fuse box on the firewall two wires going in to it.  there is a fuse (buss type) that bridges them.  Apply power to either side for about 10 seconds prior to trying to engage the starter….. Make sure the engine is in Neutral and Parking brake full on.

You can also remove the covers over the steering shaft.
remove the steering wheel, Turns/washerstalks upper bearing housing to expose the ignition switch.  remove the single phillips and allow the switch to dangle, return the stalks, and wheel.  You can use a screwdriver to turn the switch to start.

On a diesel you have to allow the glow plugs to preheat the cylinders, so wait 10 seconds at least before you go from run to start.

red -> thick black to switch the ignition on
red -> red/black to crank it

yellow/black is X feed for lights, wipers, blowers etc so you wont get far with that. grey is live with ignition on for parking lights, brown./red if there is stereo, thin black is for the clocks and should be crimped in the same terminal as the thick black above
