My speedo/cable has started making a ticking noise. It appears to come from behind the cluster and increases rate with speed. It seems to go away over a certain speed, and shifting the cluster about seems to affect it.
Any thoughts?

Might be the speedo cable has come lose behind the cluster, try pushing it in towards the cluster from the engine bay side, in the scuttle area as it's easier to reach the cable there than behind the cluster.

If no better you may need to pull out the radio to reach behind the cluster to push the cable in or it's just about possible from underneath but it's not easy to get your arm and body under the dash as the pedals and seat gets in the way

I have had the cable squeal like a pig when it was cold. Once the cabin was warm it would stop. Scared the bejeezers the first time. Spraying the internal cable with TRI-FLOW helped me stop it but I had to respray about every 2 years….
Make sure it is clipped snuggly.

My brother had a MK2 1.3 Golf C back in the day and it made a clicking/ticking sound from behind the clocks on a frosty mornings that stopped as the car warmed up. Becasue it wasn't a permenant problem he just put up with it.

It's always another potion with you

it's definitely clipped on, it does seem to be related to temperature, and did scare the bejeezers out of me.
Does it have to be TRI-FLOW or will any PTFE lube do? It's bloody expensive here.

Well I used tri-flo for years but any PTFE will do…. Spray it from the speedo side, or you can take it off the tranny and spray it from the bottom up…
Since I have an auto I can remove it from the tranny easily…not that way on some manuals as you drop the gear…. I would stay at the speedo side.

Stick the spray tube between the speedo cable and the cable housing tube.
Soak it good.

This seemed to help. Is it okay to keep blasting it in there? Worried about it being a pipe into the gearbox.

It hasn't stopped - comes and goes. I put a fair amount in. Maybe it's the speed itself? One guy thought it was the orientation of the cable though the bay.

It's the cable, and may take a while to work about.
On my automatic, I could take the center out easily, clean the snot out of the cable and plugged the sheath inside the cabin, then sprayed the hooty out of the cable and the sheath, re-insert and it didn't come back.
Manuals are a tad different…than the ease that you can take a automatic cable on and off.
