Rev Limiter Relay No. 62 VW Part Number?

Post

Back to the top
I have done some research, but I would appreciate if someone can confirm that I understand correctly. I want to install a rev limiter on my 1991 DX 1.8 GTI Cabrio. I think mine has the CE1 fuse box. At position 2, I currently have relay No. 63 (VW P/N 321 906 059F) installed. Is the No. 62 relay a straight plug and play fit? Or do I have to further modify the wiring?

I am getting different Part Nos for the Relay No. 62. Some say VW P/N 443 907 385B, others say 321 906 059G or 321 906 056G. Which is the correct one please?

I am also interested to know the VW Part No. for the correct Rev Limiter Rotor.

Part number on relay 62.
321 906 056G is the part number on mine

If the relay you have works why worry about changing it? There is no benefit going to the red line as the power starts to drop off 5500 rpm and you have a rev counter fitted to the car.

There should be no mod to fit the relay just pull the old out and push the new relay in.

I have edited the original post for some clarifications and corrections.

Mark, I know that the relay on mine is dated 07/95 so that must surely have been replaced at some point on a '91 car. Apart from that I have found info saying that originally it should have the rev limiter relay, so I want to change it for correctness and also for safety reasons in case something goes wrong with a stuck throttle cable as an example. I saw a BMW engine blow itself to self destruction a few days ago in such a case. I don't want to risk anything similar on mine.

May I ask at what rev limit does yours cut off please?

In 20 years of driving the car I've only ever hit the rev limiter twice and it kicks in at the the start of the red on the rev counter 6250 rpm.
I've also got a Mk1 scirocco which has no rev limiter and that has gone above 7000 rpm then into the petrol guage (in my younger years of driving like an idiot!) but the power from the engine starts to fall away at 6000 rpm so no point going to the red line.

You can also get rotor arms which have a limiter built in.

I understand your concern  and appreciate the words of warning regarding over revving. Thanks. But I still want to install it knowing that I'm used to my aircooled VW engine still pulling at 7000RPM ;-)

443907385B and 321906056G are probably still correct just NLA/superceeded. I cant confirm the 385B one as I cant get to ETKA right now, but Mark has confirmed the 056G is correct for older 62 relays at least!

321 906 059G is the current VW part number for the 62 relay anyway :)

Right I can confirm 443 907 385B is superceeded by 321 906 059G, but ETKA cant find 321 906 056G at all so it must be long since deleted!

right more digging for another thread, and workign on it i think we have this:
62 = 443907385b/321906059G / 3.300.220 / ? = 6.5k limiter?
63 = 321906059D-E-F / 3.300.210 / 935VG0090 = no limiter
65 = 321906059H / 3.300.230 / 935VG0080? = 6.5k limiter

Thanks for all your help John. I have now found a good used and supposedly tested one off Ebay, No. 62 with VW P/N 321 906 059G. Hopefully it will work as advertised.
