RESULT! Coolant Temp Sensor Replaced............

Good Afternoon Guys

I was having an issue with the engine coolant temp gauge not working on my Cabby, replaced the temp sender and the gauge now moves, get in, however I'm now worried that it is under reading as it was very slow to move at first and only managed the second line as per the image and this was just as the fan kicked in, not sure what exact temp the coolant was at but it was fairly hot, can anyone tell me what temps the lines represent? It may be that it is working fine but I was reluctant to let it run any hotter in case I damaged the engine. Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Not sure if they represent ant particular temp, but my fan kicks in when it gets to the 3/4 mark, usually runs normally a fraction under half way, so looks like you may have an issue.

Thanks Richard, I thought so, looks like the sender is faulty but its a brand new one from VW Heritage, may have to send it back and try another one , that's all it can be as the gauge moves quickly and freely when I short the plug, never mind, thanks. ATB PJ

Normal running 1/2 way the 1st line is about when the thermostat opens and the far line is its getting very hot, beyond that turn the engine off!
The fan normally kicks in at 3/4 and takes the guage down to 1/2 one stopped.
Check which sensor you have fitted, what colour is it?

It has a blue body and plug Mark, its the one at the 6 o'clock position on the coolant flange

Im trying to get the part number off the old one, its corroded but reckon I can get it after an overnight soak in solvent. Lets hope I have simply fitted the wrong one! I know there are several sensors in the system so need to do some digging!

Thanks

Is the water temp switch not screwed into the housing at the front of the head next to the thermotime switch? The picture looks like the radiator fan temp switch.

First Golf, lots of work. I've started so I'll finish!

I think it's a later car with a housing like this where the sensors are just clipped in place?

Sorry can't be much help on those type of sensors as I've got the early type which screws into the flange so not had any experience with them.

Not much help from here as well as they don't seem to list the sensors for the later type just the early type? That one seems to be black?????
Have a search on this site or call your local VW dealer and they should be able to tell you what part number and colour sensor you need.

Thanks for the info guys, replaced the blue one (which was the wrong one) with a black one with the same part number as the one I removed, works a treat now. Fan kicks in just over 1/2 way and normal running just under 1/2 so happy with that
