Problems with Speedo intermittently working

Last few days I had issues where the Speedo didn't work when I pulled away, but the rev gauge worked fine. After a few minutes it usually springs into life.
I replaced the cable as it was a bit worn through, but the new one has similar issues. Sitting on the drive, if I fully home the cable to the back of the gauges, then manually turn the red gear on the other end, it won't move the Speedo needle. If I loosen it and jiggle it a bit it works again.
I guess the back of the gauge is loose or faulty, but I've yet to pull it out. Is it something common that can be fixed or will I need a whole new set of gauges?

Heh, that was my post originally. This issue isn't the odometer that seems fine, more the actual speed gauge/needle doesn't move off zero until I've been driving for a while.

Just read this again, you are right, I've got the wrong end of the stick. Look forward to seeing the solution.
