Hopefully quite an easy one - I bought one of the headlight loom upgrade kits from Ebay a good year or so ago and I went to fit it the other day, however I've lost the instructions! It looks straight forward enough but can anyone confirm what the wire with the ring connector (red and blue wires in the pic) is for? The kit I bought is very similar to this one, but not the same seller: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mk1-Mk2-Golf-headlight-upgrade-wiring-loom-/351928224064?hash=item51f08e8940:g:nLIAAOSwKOJYJZsx
Thanks in advance!

Looks to be for the High beam, but that picture is a bit less than stellar.
Here is the link to the harness wiring that I did. The one on top is for a 3 relay, and the one ont he bottom is for a 2 wire relay.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

If it helps, here's a photo of my loom. The wires I mean are the 2 blue ones (not red, sorry!) with the ring connectors that come out of the yellow blocks.

They are the grounds.
compare the harness headlight to my drawing I forgot to add the ground to the brown path.
I will correct that.

Would of been nice for them to use Green or Brown wire for the ground…
I have "fixed" my drawings.

looks like he is expecting you to earth the lamps to the chassis rather than the battery, not ideal as it means finding some bolt near by and bare the metal under it or drill holes…
only 1 fuse and 2 relays means there is no failover there, if a relay goes you loose both sides, and if the fuse goes you loose ALL of the lights.
Ideally you want at least 3 relays and fuses, 1 fuse and relay per side for dipped and 1 fuse/relay for main (you don't use these often so just the 1 is probably fine, but feel free to add an extra fuse and relay if you want!)

Excellent, thanks chaps! I suspected they were for the earth.
I'll have a look at your diagrams Brian and see if I can figure out how to add the extra relay and fuses. Wish me luck!

The reason that I didn't add a ground path to originals is that I was using the ground from the Socket on the left side to apply a Equal ground, I can see why he wanted to have separate grounds so each bulb is grounded to the same potential or frame. This is so both lamps get the same voltage and not a difference.

I suspect the real reason is cost savings, same reason only 1 fuse and relay is used
