Hazards and Indicators not working?

Post

What have I done?

Fitted an Rclick remote CL kit to my MK1 cab, but the indicators on the column and the hazards now do nothing. I've checked all fuses which are fine, and I've also got a fully charged battery. When I push the hazard switch or flick the indicator the green LED on the dash lights up but stays on. Only thing I can think I've touched is the permanant live on the stalk column and also spliced into the indicators on the stalks for the flasher pulse on the RCL kit.

I've checked the blue/white wire that goes to the hazard and this is fine. Out of ideas other than properly tapping into the stalk wiring rather that splicing using the little clip around blocks?

Decided to take out the knee bar and find out whats going on down by the column. Looking like at some point there was an aftermarket alarm installed and someone has attempted to repair (I say attempt, twisting wires and gaffa around them) so that it really needs sorting out properly, I would really worry about a fire etc if anything was bodged. Luckily i've got a soldering iron and a fresh box of heatshrink, along with some proper OE style cloth loom tape.

What I really need help here with is finding out which wires are original and where they should be going etc. Starting with the block connector on the column, the current order is:

Thick red = Thick Red *brown wire has been spliced off this*
Yellow/Black = NOT CUT OR MODIFIED
Grey = NOT CUT OR MODIFIED
White = NOT CUT OR MODIFIED
TWO thin black wires = soldered into one brown wire then back into TWO thin black wires
Brown = thick red/black wire

Can anyone help me? Even a pic of their column wiring would be so much help

This is a quick picture of the block in question:

On a side note, can I use a 6N polo electric window switch instead of the MK1 ones? MY switches are knackered and I need an alternative.

thats the ignition switch wiring

30 - red - live
15 - black - ignition live (2 wires here)
50 - red/black - starter motor
X - black/yellow - x-over relay trigger
p - grey - parking lights

basically anythign that has been tapped into those wires needs to be snipped off and binned. the wires above go from switch to fusebox without any dodgy tappings into them :)

Perfect john as usual, so just snip off any tapped into wires and insulate then.

Any idea why the starter red/black is connected to a brown wire instead?

Lovely

Will get on it tonight and repair the bodges, at least its not as bad as I initially thought! Just got to sort out the hazard/indicator issue now.

Do you think a relay could be at fault? The wipers don't work either…

check you have 12v to the red/white wire to hazard switch, and ign live to the blue/black. make sure the bodges to the wiring havent extended to the black/green, black/white and black/white/green wires to the stalks or anywhere else in the dash loom for that matter.

the hazard relay is #21, wipers is the 19 relay. the 17/18 relay powers the wipers, lights, blower etc so check that as well, triggered by the black/yellow wire to ignition switch

Might be getting a step closer now, took the wheel off and there is a screw missing which holds on the stalks to the column, it's the one at the very bottom. Is this an earth point or anything of importance? It looks like it pins a metal plate to the housing of the ignition?

Still struggling, thought i'd replace all of the fuses with new ones in case it was a duff fuse. All replaced using a layout I think you posted elsewhere John but still no good. I've attached a pic of the fusebox just in case I am missing any relays etc?

for a start you have an extra wiper relay in the a/c relay socket, and a low coolant warning relay in the rear wiper socket (probably goes in the spare socket above fusebox, check wire colours it has red/yellow or blue/yellow, plus black/yellow, brown and red/brown)

Tested the permanent and switched live on hazard switch and all work as expected, changed the flasher relay and again no change. Fuses are all fine too replaced them all and reshuffled the relays as per the fusebox FAQ, still got a faint dim light green dash light which glows brightly on indication switched or hazard. Any more ideas John?

Wipers and heater blowers didn't work either but the relay in block 8 was the cause, the unit is fine but it isn't making connection in the fusebox, it needed to be pushed right in and out a few times and even now has to be inserted at an odd angle to get it to work.

The car had a quite bad moisture problem when I bought it, could the fusebox be at fault?

yeah i would say so for the relay issue anyway. for the hazard issue it could be related or maybe the hazard switch is bust

Changed hazard switch and still no good, got a replacement fusebox ordered so hopefully thats the problem. I'm thinking because the car was sodden inside, the moisture has got into the fusebox and now the weather has improved and the moisture has gone, any connections had corroded enough to cause issues…

Hopefully anyway i'm starting to lose faith  :P
