GOLF GTI MK1 DX mysterious connector disconnected

Post

Unplugged connector above the gearbox area.

 Hello everyone,

I have a question.
The car is a 1982 Golf GTI Mk1 DX. I'm doing a tune-up after it has been sitting for many years. Under the air filter box (it's a European car, not UK)

I've seen that there's this loose connector. Its connection is in the gearbox area, but I'm not sure if it is the gearbox itself. Does anyone know what it corresponds to?

*NOTE: With this connector unplugged, the car has RPM and Speedo (The Economy-fuel-gear gauge is not working). I've plugged this connector, and apparently, I didn't see any difference.

If you look at the photos, the connector has female pins that don't have a male counterpart. They don't connect to anything? It doesn't make much sense.

That connector is for your reverse lights and also enables the mpg guage when in 5th gear. Mpg only works in 5th,if it works at all, never managed to get mine working. There should only be 4 wires.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here

Ok. I see. Thanks for your answer. I've found info about this. I'll try to fix it.
