A quick look on eBay it seems petrol and diesel are different, could be a different spin speed or the drive gear may be a different size?

You'll get more torque from a diesel starter so it will definitely be up to the job. If it fits….

Original one looks very small!
Give the bush for the shaft in the gearbox casing a a good clean and a good dod of grease when your installing it. Hope your battery has sufficient Amps to keep the new one happy in the cold
