Coolant level Relay Question

I've finally got round to wiring up the coolant level relay.
I just wanted to check how it should work. With the expansion tank connector disconnected the temperature needle rises to just below half way as per my picture below.
The temperature led is flashing like normal when the ignition is turned on and then goes out but I would expect it to still flash with the connector off.

Only wiring diagram I could find that has a a coolant level sender and relay on it is this one shared by Rubjonny - g1cabwiring84.pdf - Google Drive
Not sure if that helps you at all.
When you say the temp needle goes up to half way, is that as soon as you turn it on? Wouldn't have thought that was correct.

I spoke to John and he thinks the relay is out of spec so have a genuine one on the way
