Coil pack

Dilemma…….
After recieving the engine back from the builders..refitted and connected everything back up…managed to start but not running well, very little power in 4th+5th,the engine builders advice is the coilpack maybe at fault, the coilpack that I had on was from a polo mk4 the one they used to dyno the engine was from a polo mk2

they have sent me the mk2 coil pack which I have fitted  but now the rev counter is not working……arranged for an auto electrician to come this weekend but he has let me down
Anybody any advice this is the wiring on the mk2 coilpack presumed it was a simple case of connecting the middle 3 to the distributer and just connecting the + and - s up but now no rev counter?

Forgot to add the reason they used a different coil pack was because the new bottom end has an electronic distributer whereis the old one  used a rotor

ah, just use a standard mk1/2 coil and tci unit chap. way more reliable and will definitely work your rev counter

Thanks for  the advice, but after getting it running last night it is evident that there are engine issues, the engine builder seemed to think the lack of power at the top end could have been down to the coil pack breaking down,(had my doubts)but I have fitted the coil pack they sent me…. the new one they had dyno,d the engine with,…..although I havent sorted the wires properly(no rev-counter)the engine starts easily and runs ( lumpy)even after having the carbs balanced, but there is still no power…if this is the case and the power issue is with the engine would I be better to fit  my original coil pack back in ? The mk4 coil pack I have drawn a picture of….. obviously the 3 wire plug to the dizzy just plugs in…does the + and - wires go into the 2 terminals above if so does the earth wire just go to the body …..this is where I mucked up,when I pulled it apart cant remember where the various wires went seem to remember that the positive went in and out again. This is how I think it was

with the 3 pin dizzy you have to run the old rev counter wire to the -ve terminal inside the flap on the side of the coilpack, there shouldn't be any other wires to the inside. also no need for resistors or any other wires to ground on the -ve pin just run the rev counter wire straight to the -ve terminal.

then for the 3 pin all it needs is ignition live, earth and a wire from the ecu/dizzy to trigger it.

but looking at the state of that loom you should just bin it all and replace with a fresh loom from a mk1/2 with electronic ignition, plus as i say fit a std electronic ignition mk1/2 coil and 7 pin TCI unit. the 3 pin coils are rubbish, ask any MK3 owner how many times they had to replace theirs
