Ah, ok do you know where I'll find the ballast resistor on a 1988 mk1 caddy 1.6 Bugs?
I stupidly left my ignition switched on when checking my lights etc so it drained the battery and now I've got no spark, charged the battery back up and changed the coil, so guessing I've blown the ballast? Does that sound about right?
Cheers Darren.

188 is probably electronic ignition, if you have a 3 pin plug on your dizzy then its electronic and so no balast resistor. ps, bin the sidelight resistor it causes nothing but trouble and loom fires

Sorry to hijack the thread but do you think this could be causing my little loom fire behind my dash Rubjohnny? (see my other thread) Will my 1984 gti cabby have one? Thanks

normally it would be the headlight switch loom that catches fire, plus 84 is too early iirc for the rdimdip resistor to be fitted?

Its a points ignition for sure John, I had the coil tested today and it is good, they also said its a non ballast coil,so that must mean there's no ballast resistor??
Is there anything else that could off blown or burnt out apart from the points and condenser?
Cheers Darren.

Have you got a multimeter or test lamp? Check the voltage to the coil.

I've decided I'm going to fit a electronic ignition as I've got a donor mk1 cabrolet 1.8 clipper with the wiring and ignition module.
Next question- Will this be a direct fit?? I've also got a mk2 gti with all the bits but not sure if it's compatible?
Any help will be great

only thing you need to do is remove the ignition live wire from the fusebox and add your own, as the points ignition purple/white wire is a resistor type and so will not provide enough power for an electronic ignition coil. you'll need the coil off the donor as well

Thanks for getting back John.
here's the set up at the coil with points ignition at the mo.

and here's the electronic set up.

cant I just snip the lilac and white wire and use the black wire which feeds to the same connector?

The lilac and white & red and black wires seem to feed back to a red socket on the back of fuse box, is that correct?
cheers Darren.

the black wire on the coil now is no good, that comes from the starter motor for a voltage boost when cranking over. that wire can also be binned after you upgrade to electronic ignition
the feeds to the coil should run to the white D plug on the fusebox, see here (CE1 fusebox)
http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?219775
as i say you'll need a new coil as well the points ign one is no good

leave the red/black, put that to the new coil same as it is now. with the live feed you can either add another pin to the fusebox plug D or use one of the spades on the back, I would suggest G/2 or G/5.
if you wanted to add a new pin its one of the large round ones, so not too bad to remove use a thin screwdriver to lever the lock pegs in, then pop a wire in chopped out of a donor loom. you can buy the pins new as well if you have a pro crimping tool

Ok John, ive just set everything up with the elec distributor etc.
I havent tried starting it yet because the rotor arm is not in the same position
as it was before( about 15% off where it was with the points distributor)
S0 i guess the offset is different in the spindle where it sits on the bottom?
Does this matter?
Thnaks for your help, Darren.
