Anyone know what number nine here is/does. Part Number 251 953 577, glide piece.
I have an aftermarket steering wheel so don't know if it's necessary.

I believe that it is something to do with the intermittent wipe facility. Some early cars or basic cars did not have it.
I had a Mk2 and had to replace the stalks, I removed it to allow the intermittent wipe position to function.

It is part of the turn/flash stalk assembly that is part of the self-cancelling spring…
It is the white piece in the middle that the spring rides in.
It isn't part of the Wiper Stalk.
