New hood ....

Spent many hours putting a new hood on cables etc all fine , but hood is far to short ! Supplier says it will stretch! Not a chance it will stretch 10/12 inches …… any advice appreciated . Cheers

Considering that the front pocket is missing I would say that is improper manufacture and you shoudl get a new one.

Yours seems to be a bit short and unfinished.  Or possibly it is for a Miata, MG, New Fiat . But it ain't a Golf

You sure the hood you have is for a MK1 cab and not a MK3.
As Briana says it’s missing off the front bit.
Where did you get this from?

I’d also change the interliner and padding too yours is looking well past it’s use.

Your cables aren’t fine either you’ve no side tension cables for a start looking at your piccy.
Not sure what your working with or what you have mate.

That roofs not right… have a look/read here as I found it very helpful when I fitted my new roof.

Not really helpful if the hood is incorrect.
He’s said he’s spent hours fitting the roof and cables.
So must have some idea of how it goes. Although I’m not seeing side tension cables attached where they should be.
Looks more like a MK3 hood at the front as they don’t have pocket.

It’ll become cleaner once the Member comes back and we can get more info to help him in the right direction inc proper parts or fitting services if they want that.

Now that you mention it, I ordered a set of side cables once and they sent me a set for a Cabrio, and not a Cabriolet.

 

I was just showing a link as it's got some nice pictures in it so they can cross reference with what they have and maybe inform the seller of the roof, page 13 shows you what the correct roof looks like once placed on the car and we have already said the roof is the wrong type…

Pictures say a 1000 words sometimes.. I always find it easier with pictures.  

Briano already put pictures up of what a MK1 roof should look like.
So there’s plenty of comparison for them.
Let’s see what they report back.

Thanks for all your advice ,  pic was for  supplier to look at ! Im aware side cables are not fitted ! I was just trying to show him that it was the incorrect hood  apparently it's short because I'm fitting it in the cold  !!!! If I have no luck with him tomorrow I may go down the trading standards route. It clearly states on the receipt it's for a mk1 golf .

No amount of heat is gonna stretch that lol.
It doesn’t even resemble a MK1 hood.
Give me a call either before 12:00 or after 1:30 as I got a client coming to pick his car up.
Just done full refurb on it.

Update : after several phone conversations, supplier has now confirmed that it's for a mk3 escort !!! Replacement being sent out 😀. Carl Chorley - your  help & advice has been invaluable, thanks ….

As an aside, I have found that fitting a hood, roof, or top whichever you are comfortable calling it is a pain when it is 50 degrees or colder.  I have done them in winter and in an unheated garage, but the caveat is that I run about 2000 watts of quartz halogen lamps which can get my garage up to about 75-80 degrees in a few hours and that supple vinyl will give and take easier.  

Also don't discount the effect of sunlight on a top to assist you in the Stretching of the thing.  Vinyl stretches more than Canvas….but both will look great and be better when the sun is allowed to "heat them up a bit"

Over the years I have also found that if you set the rear cable first after trimming the excess off the seam it fits easier and the use of KY-Jelly in the cable trough/tray and on the cable makes adjusting it to the left or right to center easier… Once the rear cable is set, then you can place the pocket on the front and set it in place and allow the hood and frame to close so you can get an idea where the rear window is supposed to be.  
Cut the Rear window hole leaving 4-5 inches inside the frame to grab and staple this hole that you cut will allow enough slack for the front of the top to drop to the almost closed position and then you can set your front pocket or edge and not have the rear cable pull out of place….makes the job a whole lot easier.

When I replaced my first top, there was only "Forrest Kings" word document to give you the steps, and it was a royal pain in the posterior to set the rear cable and such…. When I was doing my second one, I started to take pictures and really really dive in to getting the tricks down to make it easier….

Chortle, like me have done a few tops, and every top is a custom fit, it takes a little finessing to get it right.

I like Chortle are gluttons for punishment I enjoy doing a top.  

The biggest tip I have found was a set of unbroken side cables on an original top, which allowed me to get the length of the side cables so that you can make them up easier and get a tight fit.  Also by adding a bit of flat plumbers chain you take the strain off the cable and it won't break behind the ferrule swedge.  I have a set on my green cabby that have been through 2 top replacements so far, and show no signs of breaking.
