There were 2 different styles of handles.
4 door or 2 door.
There are difference in the locking mechanism (the striker pawl).
The part numbers are:
155837205A Left
155837206A Right.
To move the key cylinder over you unscrew the Phillips on the rear edge of the door.
Pry off the cover.
remove the Phillips screw.
Slide the handle to the front to release the front catch and pull out.
To swap Key Cylinders.
Remove the Phillips screw holding the pawl.
Remove the Pawl and the Spring.
Push down on the rear of the lock and it will "pop" out the handle face.
I always use a bit of Grease on tumblers or Key Pins.
If your Lock is Dinked up, here is a URL that will help you take your pins out and move them to your new handle.
This way you don't have 2 different keys one for doors, and one for everything else.

mk2 golf door handles are indeed a different part number to cabrio, but MK2 are the same as mk1 tintop.
I think the main issue is the cabrio window mech is slightly closer to the handle which is why they wont go.
if its just the lock which is damaged, simply buy a 2nd hand mk1/2 genuine handle and swap the lock barrel over. if you carefully strip it down you can swap the tumblers over from the damaged mk1 lock to the new lock as above
be sure to get a new main base gasket too, yours seems to be some bodged up foam affair. short term swap the passenger lock over to the driver side that'll work fine
I vaguely recall having an issue fitting handles to my cabrio but was just so long ago I cant remember the exact details. I propbably attemted to delock the passenger side with a rear mk2 handle, as I had fitted remote central locking…
