Tailgate lock

Got a NOS tailgate recently fitted to my Golf which I can't get the boot lock to fit in with the latch. There isn't enough space to fit into the tailgate. Have I got a different tailgate to one fitted to a 1983 Gti or is the lock barrel the wrong one? Please help it's driving me mad lol! See pictures of what I have.

looks to be the same part for all, the seal seems to be separate maybe if you took that off first and fit to the boot then push the lock in from behind?
