Some glues can come undone in hot weather and remember the roof will conduct a lot of heat too.

You can use a hair dryer to speed the glue cure time on the surface you've glued but the timing is critical as you don't want it bone dry..

Though I had somebody fit the headlining for me, I was his lacky, I was amazed that apart from a bit of spray adhesive now and again at the back rear quarters, the guy used 3Ms Refix tape and masking tape instead of the usual contact adhesive and bull dog clips.
No sticky fingers and quite a clean operation.
We did use a Newton commercial headlining, quite light, it could be attached and repositioned as required using the 3M tape.
You can see that I did not have the front screen fitted when the headlining was fitted and not a bulldog clip in sight.
When finally fitted there were a few transportation / fold creases which have disappeared completely.
Hope this helps.

There was no sound deadening on the C pillars, this was the only area (towards the bottom) where some spray adhesive was used.
Once the headlining is fitted, fitting the seat belt fittings and parcel shelf mounts required a little searching as to where they should fit. A neat X cross cut by the upper seat belt mounting hole and small amount of material removed was all that was required.
The same applies to the interior light, drivers mirror and sun visors.
Hope this helps

Malcolm, do you know what 3M tape it was. Spoke to 3M's technical department today and they can't advise a tape for this application. Most likely looks like 3M 9088FL , 3m 9088P or possibly 3M 300LSE but don't know really.Malcolm said

Starting headliner next week and rally don't want to use contact adhesive.

You need the good old fashioned smelly stinky get you high if you sniff it glue that cleans up with lacquer thinner.
Amazing goop makes a Plumbers variety, that is water proof, but I don't think it comes in a spray.

The Fibre boards can Break, Get Water-Logged, and turn to paper.
While I have replaced the headliners on different cars over the years, but not my 81 Diesel, I have a couple of things to add besides smelly glues.
I have repaired them with Pop-Cycle Sticks, Nylon Woven Dry-wall Tape, JB-weld, and the like over the years where edges were knackered, bent…. Warped due to age/moisture.. Getting them new is a advent in hunting for hen's teeth and the Holy Grail.
But now as old age is here I have had the Dastardly thought of the next one that goes in a car of mine, is to use the old one as the template, to re-create it out of corrugated plastic sign material. It doesn't weigh any more than the original fibre, the corrugation makes it stronger, and can be heat bent, or cut. It comes in two widths over here… Really thin, and Thicker wich is about double the size.
I was looking for some 1/8 inch staples for my Door Cards, and perchance stopped by a sign maker….
We started to BS as one is want to do, and he mentioned that a Friend of his is using Sign stock as Canvas for his Paintings It came in 4X8 foot sheets… DING, DING, DING, all kinds of alarms were going off as to using this as the fibre board replacements for Door card backings, then headliners… So I just tuckered it away, and just now had a re-rememory…. for what it is worth.
