MK1clipper rear speakers

Post

As I'm about to wire up a sound system with front speakers it would obviously be a good time to get some sound in the rear too, does anyone know if mk1 clippers camewith rear door card speakers as standard? And the best way to route the cables? Thanks

some but not all to my knowledge. if speakers are already in you can just re - wire but if you are fitting an amp you could just wire them direct from one of the channels on that

Depending on your year of your cabby will depend what size speakers they have in the back, from memory the early cabbies had 10cm and later 6x4"

If it's a clipper it should be later (big bumpers right?) and probably 6 x 4 inch, I have alpines in mine and I ran the wires down the back of the dash, followed the wires down the left of the car and then one set across the bottom of the seats under the carpet

It's a 1989 clipper(big bumper) with this style interior I've just managed to bag these original doorcards to fit original front speaker pods with 6x4's, might try that first then see if I need the extra sound image.png image.png

MK1clipper rear speakers

Do they match the door cards you have now, cause they look earlier?

they look like the earlier ones so will be the smaller 10cm speakers in the rear - they look the same as mine. The front are the earlier ones as the speakers are normally housed in the plastic door pocket trim on the door, but what people do is flip them round so they can get bigger speakers in. If you look closely the plastic door pockets are off the other side of the car!

This is what I've fitted to my 1988 Cabriolet.
Rear cards look like this

Speakers I fitted as the originals was fitted to a housing fixed to the 3 fixings holes.

You can go to deep as they will get hit by the side windows. The wiring was already in my car as it came with rear speakers from new.

Hi Bud… hope ya motor's going well…
with the rear speakers, when i bought my cabby, the back speakers sounded vibey if that makes sense… so another thing i wanted to renew! :) looked into a few things, basically no chance of aftermarket speakers anywhere, searched high & low… the fittings were under 100mm for the speakers to fit into the original spec. i think the actual outer speaker cone was about 87mm (off the top of my head) the nearest i could get were MAC Audio speakers - so to get these to fit in the area, without messing about, i bought a sheet of dynamat, cut this around the base of the cone, put 2 layers on this & stuck it to the rear speaker rim & put some around the speaker fixing on the car. Got a standard stereo (keeping my car standard) & they sound pretty good. Put the surround sponge back as normal too.
As for the wiring, I had a cabby a long time ago, had an Alpine crossover Amp - Boom  Alpine head unit… With the wiring that was on the car i wired it up through the amp. The head unit had leads chased through the side of the car, under the flooring mat into the boot. Had the amp on a sub box (yep most of my boot was taken up by a boxed JL Audio sub ) all connected, powered up direct with the battery & fused too. So the wires in the car fitted from factory, disconnected, Refitted Alpine 6x4's in the front door, standards in the rear door cards disconnected. Made a parcel shelf from MDF & fitted 6x9's… also had tweeters. So basically re-wired from the Amp. Booming in a cabby…  those were the days…
