Settling In

been down the motorway the othe day and was informed my roof was ballooned looked like a beetle ha, what are the possible reasons for this and how do I strap the roof back down?

I would think it's the two straps that fit to the underside of the roof, slot through the padding and rivet to the hood frame.
If you look at step 5 of the roof fitting guide you'll see what I mean.

With your roof part open you should be able to see if these are still attached or not. You may be luck that they just need re-riveting. Are your side tension cables ok too?

I expect your side tension cables have snapped, it is possible to replace them with the roof still on the car but it's a pain. What type of roof do you have Mohair or vinyl?

hi thanks for your comments, its the original vinyl roof so will be 24 years now

Holding straps have most likely gone.
These are sewn into the hood seams themselves during manufacture.
So new roof ideally.
That's why you should fit the tonneau cover when the roof is down.
They keep the headliner clean also, but prevent back pressure to the folded hood.
You can always tuck it back in to concertina fold then fit the cover.
Side tension cables have no effect on a folded roof as they are not under any tension.
