Glue for vinyl hood
Thinly coat both areas, lee ace to flash off then join surfaces.
I use one off eBay from wayside adhesives on there.
I use it on all my hood fitting jobs.
Are you fitting a new top?

but it came with a new top in the deal. so i thought yea that will be like half hours work gonna be fitting it this weekend. i made some new adjusters as the last ones were conected to the 'bits' of wire from the previous hood. I got the wire online from a cable supplier and a bit of pipe to protect the new top. i cleaned up the frame and painted it. I got a new headliner going in aswell.
i have seen some of the post you have been in and and you're mention in some of the guides i think. So thanks for that. i am feeling quite confident i will be able to do it.
i will prob be asking about a cover. when the summer comes of course

What are the adjusters you say.
I'd also check the rear window frame isn't rotted out before you start.
Once it's out and falls apart it's a issue as it needs to be in good condition, rust treated, prime red and painted or a new one in place before the new top goes on, as the hood fits over it before you cut a hole for it.
Headliners are also year dependent there are three sizes not a one size fits all.
You need the following
New foam gasket seals.
Proper rear tension cable and a pair of side tension cables.
These vary on length year depending as does the position of the tension springs.
Rivets and backwashers.
Stainless steel staples for your staple gun.
Hope that helps.

Tops don't like being fitted in really cold weather.
You can end up with the top not closing or being ripped when you force it shut..

drilled, shaped a bit more and threaded.
and got some pvc coated cable and ferules. so what you said scared me a tad
yeh i have the roof in the heat to keep it warm and keep it flexible. it will be done in a warm ish garage. I have no need to rush it.
i got a few weeks at least as i got the brakes to do next.
the rear window frame is in pretty good condition i sanded it down coated it in vactan and then sprayed over with rustoleum, to protect it.
got tonnes of rivets and washer so shouldn't be a problem. i haven't checked the headliner yet. maybe i should have i am gonna have to check the staples. i have to take the ones i got, back as they wont fit my gun. so i will deff check if they are stainless.
at the end of the day it has got to be better than the one i took off. it had a lot of gaffa tape on it.
looked like someone tried to brake in.
thanks for the advice man. always good to hear from someone expierienced.

Can be too dense.
So you run the risk of the frame compressing too much on the window glass.
Plus you need the correct thickness to allow for that.
Otherwise you can end up needing to adjust the glass or it not fitting properly and over stressing the frame.
If the adjuster your talking about you've made a rear tension cable?
One thing I always buy is a correct cable.
OEM cables have a thicker hard plastic section to hold the hood material in place.
You run the risk of the cable showing once the roof is fitted and it comes under tension.
It pulls on the corner areas these act like a fulcrum pinging the cable out in the centre as the roof is closed..
Good if the rear window frame is mint.
A poor seal on it can result in leaks onto the parcel shelf.

On the new cables that I have ordered, they are a little too long and trying to get them to the correct tension was a PITA. (Pain in the A$$).
As Chortle said it kept popping out of the tray as I closed the hood.
So I called the vendor (complaining a bit about it) and he said on canvas hoodies to get the cable tight to hold. Mark the window cut out, and cut inside of the frame about 3-4 inches, this relieves the stress on the material and allows it to stretch so the frame will close and latch.
What Chortle was trying to show as the hood is closed:
The window frame cut.
Which allowed me to seat the rear cable and it stay in the tray. Notice that I chalk outlined it to know where the frame was. I also set my front edge and glued and screwed. Prior to cutting the window hole to get it accurate.
Here is the original steel jacketed OEM cable off a 81.
Here is one replacement.
I have replaced a few tops, on Old Beetles as well as Cabbies. On one of the Beetles I removed foam from a replacement that was 15 years old, and the foam was totally functional. So Foam will last.
On my last top, when you see in the pictures, I created my own pad coverlet and used 1/2 closed cell (nautical grade ) foam. I know the foam had a 10 year warranty for mold and mildew. It worked fine.
The horse hair matting I can't get in sheets over here.
But I have done tops for folks with the Foam as well as the Horse Hair.
I have replaced the horse hair on my Green one with horse hair, and decided to try foam.
The Horse hair pad is 5/8 of an inch thick and folded over at the edges and compressed to 3/4
How I made the front curve cut.
The reason I decided to make my own was to emulate the OEM fitment of the padding to the rear bow, as the replacements I was ordering was short for the attachment point and I had to make straps so that the rear corners attached better.
