Front driver side door catch - won't lock anymore

Post

Hullo,

So, I was fitting front speakers (all done), but then suddenly the driver side door won't lock anymore. The only way I can get the mechanicms to lock is by pushing the catch by hand, and then opening the door from the outside opens it fine.

But, the key won't lock the car anymore, simply won't turn; and also trying to lock from the inside by pushing down on the lock pillar also doesn't work….again, the pock pillar won't move at all.

Any ideas? Thanks

take the handle off and have a look, probably just got the handle lock finger stuck under the block lock tab or something

I'd love to be able to claim that made sense to me….lol

I've taken the catch itself off the door, and even trying to press the bar myself which would usually be attached to the inside "push button" won't move

If you took the lock block off the car you wont be able to 'lock' it unless you also 'close' it by flicking the mechanism with a pen or something as you cant lock the door unless it is shut

as I say, refit the lock block then take the door handle off. have a look ;)

Oh…oops? :P

Alrighty, I'll give it a go. We talking potentially a new outer handle here, or more just something has slipped out of place? I've not taken the outer handle off before, anything I need to know before doing so?

nothing to worry about, just 1 screw i9n the end of the door and another under the trim down the middle. pull the handle off and check its all good there, lube up all the moving parts if it seems ok and refit.

check it for VW part numbers/logos too though, if it has non then its probably a pattern part which could well be why its not working any more as they are all pretty terrible

Remove the cover over the center of the outer handle.

Remove the front lead screw.

Remove the rear screw under the lip of the edge of the door (look for the notch.).

Check that your finger pawls are tight and not broken or bent.

If you replace the handle, take the pawl off the old, mind the spring under it.

Push the lock cylinder out, and swap in to your replacement handle.

Also you may want to remove your lock assemblies and clean and grease them.
