Newbie question on conversion

Post

Hi all I'm a new member of the forum but been reading lots of threads here as I am developing a love for cars (mainly VW). At the moment I own a golf mk4 (first car) but my favourite golf has always been the mk1, grew up with them all my uncles family had them, really good looking and awesome cars. I wanted to get a mk1 for my first car but because of insurance and because I live in London (Greenwich) it was very hard to find one that wouldnt cost me too much.

The reason I made this topic is because an idea came to me when I read that some people are making conversions from newer cars like mk4s and mk3s. Now because of my insurance having a car with an engine higher than 1.6 means I pay min £2k :ocf_emoticons__BangHead: for insurance which is ridiculous, even tho I'm 21. Next year I might be able to get a quote for 1.9 TDI (90bhp) for £1500 or around that.

Ok so my first question is, is it possible to put a vw polo 6n2 1.4 tdi engine into a golf mk1? of course that will mean the transmission and clutch maybe I dont know the only thing I want to know is whether it is possible.
The second question is how much will the whole conversion cost including labour, everything (in uk).
Third question is how much will it cost without labor just getting everything needed to be converted.
the mk1 will stay standard the same dashboard, no electric windows, just original.

But maybe next year it would probably be worth doing a 1.9 tdi instead of 1.4… But I'd like to know how much it cost to see if it is worth it and what I am looking at.

The reason I went for a diesel engine is because of the mpg, I love to travel will be doing some miles, also they seem to last longer. I like speed dont get me wrong (maybe I'll even chip it)  but I'm sure It'll be much faster than my 1.4 petrol golf mk4 which is lazy as …

Thanks for reading sorry if these are stupid questions, I'm just starting to learn about cars…

first thing is what is the 1.4 tdi based off, small or big block? either is fine just a case of try to get the right mk1 to match it, otherwise you need to chop off the bracket on chassis leg flip and re-weld.

match mk1 driveshafts to the type of gearbox, fit correct linkages to match as well etc.

wiring loom is about same as any mk3/4 conversion, tricky but not too bad. use a mk3/4 tacho adaptor to run mk1 clocks, fit 1.3 mk1 speedo cable to polo speed sender.

other thing will be the exhaust, downpipe will need making i expect

the advantage with the 1.4 is cheaper tax though, so well worth it i recon :)

Not sure what you mean by small or big block but I assume is a small block as it only has 3 cylinders.

Thanks for all the info. Do you know a rough estimate on what a budget for this should be?

Cheers

1.0-1.3 mk1 are small block, 1.5-1.8 mk1 are big block.

i may be wrong but i thought the 1.4 diesl was big block based but im not sure! i think the troublethough is if its a 3 cylinder the driver side mount will need to be custom as I assume its not the same width as a 4 cylinder block.

1.9 diesels are drop in fit, easy peasy.

budget wise its a case of how long is a piece of string, main chunk will be securing the engien, ecu and loom i expect plus you'll need to add some for fab work of mount/downpipe,. loom if you got me to make it would be 120 most likely. then its a case of add on service parts and such

I understand… then it might be worth putting a 1.9 130bhp if they are easier….maybe in a year then…

Thanks

stock engien is about 100bhp, without the cat should free up a couple more. then some choice mods if you like, or leave it as is :)

edit: thats for the polo one ;)
