ribbed pulleys abf

Post

the pulleys on my abf engine are ribbed so how do i go on with
changing the water pump pulley which is just belt pulley.
do i change all three pulleys.crank, alternator and water pump
i know it will be simple for most but just can't get my head round it.

yes mate, use the abf aux pulleys, do you know the age of the donor car it came out of? there is 3 different sizes of belt, unless you have the old belt just take that with you

you can remove all mk3 stuff and fit mk2/corrado 16v stuff (8v stuff wont fit!), but as above I recommend you keep the mk3 stuff its better, plus mk2/rado 16v stuff is hard to get these days

I'm assuming you have a v belt pulley on your waterpump as engine had aircon? if so change the waterpump pulley for a 1.8-2.0 mk3 non-a/c ribbed pulley and fit non-a/c abf alternator belt matched to the age of the engine as there are 2 available.

only thing is if it has the separate tensioner wheel this may hit the chassis leg so bear that in mind, either a slight dent to clear or swap the alternator and bracket for early non-ac version with big spring under the alternator that clears fine. only 1 length of belt for this setup as well so that helps!

if it has pas you can just unbolt it all and bin, the waterpump and alt run off the ribbed belt

it had double pulleys ribbed crank, water pump and then alternator
then v belt water pump crank and power steering.but on the build thread
by paul c he says the inner pulley on water pump free wheels or is
that just the kr engine.

this is a kr/9a thing, your engien originally had aircon thats why waterpump is off the v-belt. swap the waterpump pulley for mk3 non-ac version and sorted :)

as i say the later self-tensioner can hit chassis leg so if you find one in scrappy thats good (no grinding or roughness when spun) the earlier springloaded setup will sort you. need alternator, spring and bracket plus the shorter belt

self-tensioning system non-ac:

earlier spring loaded alternator:
