Get the super bright LED's they use less wattage give off less heat, the only thig you have to worry about is the resistors to add to the turn lights.

What type of LEDs do i need for them? Would the resistor be on the lights on/off switch?

The resistor is placed in-line with the bulb usually on the bulb socket wire.
The LED's don't have the impedance of a bulb, so the existing flasher doesn't trip the same as it did with incandescent bulbs.
