Power steering conversion, speed sensor?

Post

I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction.

i have a power steering kit all ready to install from mk2 mania (easysteer). My question is how do I get the speed signal to the power steering?

it currenty has a switch for the 3 levels of assistance. I've been told you can take a signal from the speedo Vehicle speed sensor on the back of the speedometer with MFA.

has anyone done this?

I will do a complete write up on the conversion if I'm helped out with solving this last bit.

thanx Shane

Not too sure on compatability, but here's one I purchased to get my becker sat nav working.

This is the post I listed it on previously. I can't seem to link it direct.

Yes I think it can be done with a 555 timer IC lhasadreams might have some more info on it or maybe try the google search function.

Your switch box will have a dual 555 timer in it.
One half fakes the engine speed signal and the other half the road speed, some have a potentiometer attached to vary the road speed signal others like yours three switchable settings.
This is the thing that lets this conversion down and in my opinion can make it dangerous if you forget to switch off assistance when you come on or off a roundabout as all the auto straightening of the wheel disappears as it is absorbed by the assistance - can be a brown moment !!

After much research I came across Richard at RJes who built a box that allows you to feed a speed signal from the back of the VW clocks and set wheel size parameters and what speed you want the assistance turned on/off. It all plugs into the Corsa connectors. The wife's cabby has run like this for over five years - works very well. Unfortunately I have not been able to contact Richard for a while - may be you will have better luck.

There are a few others out there as well I believe that have built something like this.

Ade

it depends if the input it expects is the same as the VW VSS output, if it is then its a case of adding a pin into the smaller plug on the back of the cluster.

the speed of the pulse might not be so important as you might find you can fine tune it with the knob?

anyway the VSS pin on the MK1 cluster is pin 6 of the 6 pin plug on the back, and it will only work if you a) have the plug and b) have the speedo sender fitted to the back of the speedo.

MFA clocks all have the above but certain non-MFA clocks still have the plug and track i nthe PCB foil for the VSS you just swap the speedo sender in from a set of GTI clocks. Some dont have the plug housing but you can add one as the holes and PCB foil is there still for it if that makes sense

On the wife's cabby we had to fit a second pickup to the back of the speedo as the standard VSS signal does not produce enough pulses per revolution for the Corsa electronics.
