mk1 golf/caddy braking upgrade

Post

o.k. so I am doing a braking upgrade and was just going to keep it simple by upgrading the discs /pads and servo&master but then got to thinking about the caliper as well and wondered….. is it possible to use a vw3 caliper on a mk1 hanger instead of the vw2 caliper, will it fit straight up onto the hanger, and are there any benefits in doing this as in larger bore piston etc???
any help would be cool as I don't want to be buying stuff I can't fit! :)

VW3 caliper won't fit. I think you can get an adapter bracket though. An alternative that does bolt straight on is the Vauxhall Vectra caliper from around 1995 or so, they were also found on Astras of the era. There's a few different variations, for 256, 280, 284 and 288 discs, 2 differnent cylinder bores and a couple of pad size/shape variations, but critically the bolt pattern and spacing is the same to allow bolt on fitment.

They'll need different flexi hoses too.

I'm sure there's a post or FAQ properly describing the parts, somewhere on the site. I've previously written it out, it was about 5 years ago though.

already have a GM setup that I removed as i want to go back to vag stuff… so i know all about that, i just really want simplicity when it comes to replacing wearable's like pads n discs etc!
so i have just ordered some blackdiamond discs (239mm vented 12 groove jobbies) and will prolly just go with VW2 calipers for my mk1 caddy, and on the cabby i will run the 256mm discs with the girling type 54's i got last week! :)
