mk1 abf conversion, a year on

Post

as title, I changed my mk1 golf c engine with a abf donor engine and box, had great help from rubjonny along the way (CHEERS)

anyhow, a year or so on from not actually using it much due to a few issues ive decided to try and resolve them all.

first off is to acquire a big block mount as I modified the small one which really wasn't the best, ive now got one all ready to weld in as ive removed the other.

second was a rough running problem where the car would bog down, but pull through it with a good drashing. I searched and changed a few things which would help in numerous ways, including cleaning out the fuel tank which had a lot of rust particles.

any how, still the same, well now upon removing the engine, I found the downpipe and plugs where black, and the inlet manifold was wet and oily so seems its running rich.

I double checked the timing today, crank pulley on tdc, as to cam and flywheel.. took dizzy cap off and rotor arm is on 1. so that seems fine,

what other things to look for? upon fitting the engine it had new plugs, leads, dizzy cap..

I guess I can check to see if lambda is working by heating it up and checking for resistance change? ive got a spare fuel rail also

I want to try this all when the car is back in and running obviously as I can then mark things off a list.

one thing I wouldn't mind if someone could let me know is the main wires that could cause issue when splicing the looms, I can atleast double check them all again, I guess such as coolant temp ect? also what pins they are ect.

sorry for a massive topic, any help would be greatly received

Did you keep the stock engine management off the ABF when you converted/installed the motor?

one thing I had noticed was the nipple on the pcv was snapped off, will this cause a vacuum leak? I blocked off the nipple on manifold that goes to the pcv. the big pipe from pcv stil goes back into air intake

have you wired in the diagnostics port? if not, do so!

a good test for lambda is unplug it, if car runs much better then chances are lambda is stuffed

right next step is go thru the ecu measuring blocks so you can check all sensor inputs in real time. this thread has proper label files for vagcom/vcds:
