GTi Engineering Plate / Plaque...

Post

Google doesn't throw up that many images of the plate / plaque, specially of it in situ.

Those that I've found generally are seen on MK2's (usually on the slam panel, passenger side for RHD cars) and most MK1's with a conversion don't seem to show a plate / plaque fitted at all.

The only exceptions to that are on what appear to be two different Cabby's. One has it on the inside of the drivers side wheel arch  /  supension area and another on the metal bracket in the scuttle area that the ignition amplifier is attached to.

Where the plates / plaques introduced later than most MK1's?

I realise conversions needn't have necessarily been carried out when the car was new and that there's probably any number of other factors too that might explain why some do or don't have them… lost / transplants etc., but I'm interested in what was done by GTiE only.

Found one of the images I was referring to above, it's actually on a tin top so I was mistaken.

The other image I can't find again just at the moment but nearly positive it was a Cabrio and the plate was where the red circle is shown…

Most of the Mk1 golfs had them on the slam panel on the left side, tight to the VIN plate.

Hi Dan… only just started to revisit the forum, it's been a very long time since I took an interest in the MK1.

Hope you're keeping well and you got your own car finished (as much as they ever are)?

Can you stick up an image of your plate, I'm relying on the inter-web to find GTiE MK1 images and they're few and far between, not that many more of MK2's either but some.

The image below I pilfered, this one's a MK2 slam panel.

There's always the chance I suppose that the plates varied in dimensions over the years… the move from Silverstone to Oxford Road for example, the address is longer and they've added an additional line for the 'Conversion No."

Could've adjusted the spacing / font size to compensate, but because I'm relying on images it's hard to gauge the scale of anything for certain.

One image that's better than most for my purposes is below.

I've mapped out those 4 x hexagonal holes as found on my own MK2 so I know they're accurate.

It allows you to make a reasonable guess at that particular plates size and while the image is skewed a little because it's not taken exactly straight on I'd estimate 70mm x 95 - 100mm.

Hi, I'm the same, haven't been on here for a good few years! The 90s plaques are the same size but with smaller font…i have one as a back up!

I've just taken my engine/gearbox out two years after "finishing her" for a gearbox issue….its never ending!

I will take a pic of mine asap!

Good to speak!

Measured up a paper template of 70 x 95mm… the below's obviously subject to confirmation as to whether or not the plate turns out to be those, or very close to those dimensions…

Just about fits if you move the cars original VIN.

Conveniently there's 2 x holes to the right and down from it (circled black in one of the images) that are pre-pressed into the slam panel and exactly match the spacing / size of the holes currently securing it and also keeps within the edges of the panel / doesn't overhang.

If you delete / re-position the bonnet stay's clip it'll allow you to slide the GTiE plate further to the right.

One potential snag with that solution is the fixing for the oil cooler bracket, it may get in the way of the rivet for that corner of the plate passing through properly.

Be interesting to see an original plate in situ.

Mine is the top one with the plate a few mill off the plastic bonnet clip when I situ and the vin located on the two pre drilled holes. It's the only place the plate will fit without any overhang.

Spot on, thanks. Are my 70x95mm dimensions for the plate close?

70x95 is exactly right!
