I have a g60 in my golf it won’t idle unless I disconnect the CTS , dodgy sensor?It was driving ok but I have it off the road a while doing various work, last job changing the exhaust manifold

I would try the sensor.
I know that on my Digi2h the CTS caused no start when warm, cold starting issues as well as lumpy running.
Before I would replace it I would unplug your o2 sensor if installed as that was what you were working on, and it may be the real issue as the car is trying to run enriched.

Back again I replaced the cts but it didn’t make a difference,
plugs where very sooty .

I fitted a beru lambda sensor and it isles ok , I took it for a spin and it goes like stink , however the plugs are still getting sooty. Is there a different lambda for a g60 running no cat?Anything else I need to check that would cause plugs to be sooty?
