Couple of rebuild questions.....

Post

So I’m currently rebuilding my MK1 and intend to buy a new fuel tank, I’m putting a 16v engine in what was originally a “small block” car, question is do I stick with a non GTI tank or put a GTI tank in? (assuming they are both the same size and the only difference is that the GTI tank has an internal swirl pot!?)

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that there is an easy upgrade for the wiper motor, possibly replacing the original MK1 motor with a MK2 Golf motor, is this right?
If so I want to change it before I put the wiper assembly back in under the scuttle panel. Is there also an upgrade for the rear wiper motor that I should be thinking about?

When re-fitting all the rubber door seals what type of sealant should I be using to refit them with, tigerseal, or something else?

Use a gti tank, outlet is on drivers side at bottom so you can go straight from there to your pump.

Mk2 and mk3 wiper motor is an upgrade, I have one of each in my unit. Hopefully I can find the plug to match the mk2 (mk3 is still in the car ready for breaking)

what management are you running the 16v on?

the front wiper motor from mk2 fits and I'm pretty sure the rear motor will go as well? the plugs differ so chop those off the donor and you'll have to swap the wiper linkage and some brackets :)

Ah excellent, cheers for the replies! :thumbs:I've got a wiring loom from a 16v MK2 Golf which was running K-Jet so I believe. I'll be running ZX9R bike carbs as well if that makes any difference.

I'll see if I can get a complete MK2 wiper unit then and see how I can modify it to fit.

ok, stick with carby fuel tank, fit your bike pump and job done. you might want to check if the bike pump can suck fuel out of the tank, if not fit a lifter pump and fuel reservoir from a post-84 cab/rocco or g40 shape polo.  you can also fit a gti tank instead with the outlet on the bottom, but weigh up the costs vs the above :)
