Centre Consoles - 02J shifter?

What have people done about the centre console when they've fitted a shifter from a Mk4 Golf? I was going to use a base spec surround  but it won't fit. So I thought I'd be clever and use a mk2 base spec console that I have and thatdoesn't fit either.
Also while I'm on the subject, what gearknobs have people used? Has anyone cut threads into the shaft so a standard mk1 knob will fit?
